Reduce Facial Scarring with Laser Scar Treatments

Patients with unwanted scarring caused by an accident, injury, surgery, and/or burns may desire a laser scar reduction treatment because of the way it looks aesthetically/cosmetically or because it causes contracture or disfigurement.

Scars are often unwanted reminders of medical conditions, injuries, trauma, or surgery and may cause symptoms such as itching, discomfort, tightness, or even limited range of motion.

When they are noticeable, they can also lead to significant low self-esteem and confident. Fortunately, there are ways to treat scars today that do not involve incisions, anesthesia, and downtime.

Laser scar treatment removes the damaged layers of skin so that new, healthy skin can grow in its place. Many types of scars can be treated, including surgical scars, acne scars, and scars from injuries.

Scar Reduction Treatments

At Westside Face, we offer laser treatments to improve the appearance of scarring from burns, surgical incisions, wounds or other injuries, for all forms of scars, including:

During your initial consultation, our skilled cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Aynehchi will evaluate your scar, discuss treatment options and create a tailored plan that best meets your specific goals and expectations.

How do Laser Scar Reduction Treatments Work?

Laser scar treatments don’t make a scar disappear entirely. Instead, they’re designed to make a scar appear less noticeable.

The body repairs a wound after a skin injury by developing a scab over the injury to protect it from germs, and then eventually falls off. Depending on the depth of the injury, a scar often remains after a scab falls off.

These scars may fade or become lighter with time. When a scar becomes permanent, laser treatments are used to remove the outer layer of the damaged skin’s surface by smoothing the skin to improve tone and appearance.

These lasers are also used to target blood vessels in the scar tissue to reduce redness, and can penetrate the skin’s surface to stimulate the production of new skin cells.

Laser Scar Reduction Procedures

Upon initial consultation, your surgeon will tailor treatment options based on the type of scar and the individual needs of the patient.

Your treatment options include the following:

  • Ablative or Laser Resurfacing. This type of resurfacing treatment improves the appearance of scars, warts, and wrinkles by removing the outer layer of skin and eliminating skin cells that have been damaged at the surface level.
  • Fractionated Laser Resurfacing. This laser resurfacing procedure penetrates a deeper layer of the skin’s surface to remove dark pigmented cells to stimulate collagen production and skin cell renewal, which can make your scars appear less noticeable.
  • Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing. Infrared heat lasers penetrate the inner layer of the skin, and also stimulates collagen production and cell renewal to replace damaged skin cells.

Laser treatments for scars are outpatient procedures, although the length of procedures vary. You can expect some mild discomfort during treatment. Your doctor will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area so you don’t feel pain. You can ask for sedation if you’re treating a larger scar.

Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Scar Reduction?

Scar reduction is a highly individualized procedure, can be performed on people of any age and is a good option for you if:

  • You are bothered by a scar anywhere on your body
  • You are physically healthy and do not smoke
  • You have a positive outlook and realistic goals for your surgery
  • You do not have active acne or other skin diseases in the affected area

What to Expect During Laser Scar Reduction

The first step is to schedule a personal consultation with one of our surgeons. Your medical history, scar-related symptoms, and personal goals will be assessed. An exam will be performed. Your surgeon will discuss the options available and expectations, tailored to your specific goals.

Your initial consultation will take approximately 30-45 minutes. During this time, your doctor will review your medical history and treatment objectives. We ask that you bring a list of medications, vitamins and herbal supplements that you take, along with information on dosages.

Treatment options, including risks and benefits, will be discussed in detail. We will work with you to find the best plan for you. Our aim during the consultation is to give you the information you need to make an informed decision.

What to Expect After Laser Scar Reduction

Recovery times vary, but it may take 3 to 10 days for your skin to heal. Your doctor will provide aftercare instructions immediately following treatment.

Laser skin treatments for scars are long-lasting, although results may not be permanent, and you may need repeated treatments in the future. Results aren’t always instant, and it may take weeks or months before you notice a difference.
